Winter Flower Granny Yarn Choices

Granny Square winter flower granny

The other day, just over a week ago, I spent the entire day in bed, sick. But I could not just sleep, I took it as a chance to get some crocheting in too. And rather than finishing one of my 29700987308u737893 WIPs, I chose to fiddle with bits of yarn until I made something new.

I’m a granny girl, I just love the satisfaction they produce in the mere 36 square inches of their existence. This is the design I came up with, the Winter Flower Granny (use coupon code Design3 to get 30% off all patterns in my Ravelry shop until the end of October). I called it the winter flower because there are almost no open spots on the granny, and if made into a blanket with a close join, this has the potential to be quite warm depending on yarn choices.

That brings us to the topic at hand: Yarn. I started this project off with Lion Brand Amazing in Pink Sands and some Caron Simply Soft in Off White. Then of course, I ran out of the Amazing yarn and THERE IS NOT A SINGLE SHOP IN TOWN carrying it right now. So, as I am want to do, I started playing around with other yarns in my stash. I’ll have more pics tomorrow when my friend the Sun shows his golden face again.

Also, if you are interested in joining us, several of the online community are going to be doing a CAL together with this pattern and I’ll keep posting about yarn choices and share some of the other brands and colors I used in additional squares. Join the fun!

The photo below shows one square (bottom left) with the border/joining color around it. This yarn is Red Heart Boutique, Treasures in Sunrise. I am really looking forward to the contrast in pastel and rich color tones.

  1. Hi i love your granny squares do you do tutorials as i would love to crochet them

  2. This looks like fun. I am a beginner, but I played with crochet years (30+) ago. My grandma did it and I wish I would have learned from her. Anyway, I haven’t shied away from any challenging projects si I figured I might as well jump in. BTW, what is CAL & FO mean.

    1. That sounds great Rangelady, I love your intrepid spirit.

CAL stands for Crochet-A-Long, but I have no idea what FO stands for.

  3. I really love this pattern. But as much as I would like to join the CAL I have too many wips now to finish before Christmas. I am definitely going to make these squares as soon as I can. Thanks for the pattern.

    1. I completely understand! I was just thinking the other day, that if I just finish several of my WIPs before Christmas, I will actually save a bundle of money and time shopping this year.

  4. Got my pattern today, hopefully will get some yarn tomorrow. Very excited for the CAL! Love your patterns 🙂

    1. Thank you so much Kim, I’m very nervous, I’ve never run a CAL before. I hope we all just have a lot of fun.
